Louie,
Thanks for writing this, it is challenging me and will make me think the rest of the day.
Like you I am a part of the Restoration Movement which has taught me to take a clear look at scripture (even though most in the Restoration Movement today already think they have things sown up). I also remember meeting Wimber that evening in Cal. What an experience! It was better than Hooks Truck Stop and the Yankee Stadium/Fenway Trip and was not at 3:30 in the morning.
I remember asking Wimber if he had heard about the Cane Ridge Revival. He simply said, “Yes. Wasn’t that amazing?” It was an amazing outpouring God’s Spirit, brought on by the unity of several denominations. But, our heritage, the Restoration Movement reacts like group 2. They dismiss it. At least most of them do.
How about this for Acts 2 context? Peter stands up and tells them what they are seeing and experieincing. He addresses Group 2 – “These men are not drunk as you suppose.” He then quotes the prophet Joel. In this he talks about an outpouring of God’s Spirit. I see the context being rooted in a prophecy of what is going to happen in the last days.
Maybe the context is about God not bringing us back to a new thing, but constantly trying to remind us what he is like and that he can show up any way he pleases, even if it looks crazy to us.
Loved seeing you last week.
